In this edition: high-ticket web development cases, a game-changing reading app, PR tips from a Duolingo expert, one quote and one piece of art.
Hello Folks!
Welcome to the latest edition of Brain Tickles.
Quote I'm Pondering
Success is often the result of sticking with a problem longer than anyone else.
A Must-Have Tool
I'm currently using @Voice Aloud Reader every day. This is my secret for "reading" books while hiking or doing house chores. Once you become used to the Text-To-Speech reader voice you won’t need that audiobook subscription.
My workflow looks like this: I listen first, then reinforce by re-reading the text, highlighting, making notes, and transferring these notes into my Obsidian vault.
TikTok Video Finding
Duolingo’s Former Head of Growth Gina Gotthilf shares how to get journalists to write about you.
My key takeaway: Come up with 3 impressive names or numbers related to your startup or background and condense them into one line when introducing yourself to journalists. For example, you can say: "Hi, I'm Harry. I led growth at Duolingo, increasing users from 3 to 200 million, worked on Bloomberg's presidential campaign, and co-authored a neuroscience study."
Insightful Reddit Post
Bluskybiz asks:
Web developers that often build websites for more than $5,000 a piece, what does your business look like?
If you're involved in web development, don't miss these great thread responses:
B2B and eCommerce sites have an average budget of $20-25K.
WordPress sites for nonprofits, restaurant groups, and membership organizations are charged around $8.5K.
E-commerce websites average $18,000 with a monthly maintenance cost of $1,299.
Piece of Art I'm Obsessed With
The Court of Foolishness by Gerard de Lairesse
This painting, which has been my wallpaper for the last three months, perfectly captures the essence of today's trust issues, especially in the context of social media.
In the painting, you can see the accused pursued by Hatred, and dragged by the ear by Calumny, accompanied by Envy and Perfidy. They're taking them before a judge with donkey ears, that have Ignorance and Suspicion by advisors.
I regret missing it during my Amsterdam visit!
I would love to hear your feedback!
